Only Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic 2005 work on Windows Vista (for the time being). However, Visual Basic 6 is far more powerful than VB 2005, therefore Microsoft has vowed to maintain its functionality for the entire Vista lifecycle (five years) plus five more years. After that, it is more than likely Microsoft will develop a new version directly from VB 6.

Note that VB 6 and VB 2005 are two different compilers in terms of implementation: we can achieve with VB 6 most functionality of VB 2005, but the reverse is not possible. As for VB .Net, and VB 2003 ... well, you could upgrade them to 2005.  Even VB 6 may be upgraded to 2005, though much of the great functionality VB 6 has is lost. For beginners, VB 6  is strongly recommended, because VB 2005 is way too difficult to handle--VB 2005 is fully OOP.

Now, VB 2005 is good for developing fancy, complex Internet applications; VB 6 is good for everything, and particularly for developing technical applications. The best working examples of controlling firmware/hardware using VB 6 are presented in Learn Hardware Firmware and Software Design--they are in fact complete projects, and the last one is even ended in *.exe binary form.

Things are this way. If you intend to release a Windows software program for commercial applications, you do not use VB 2005 to compile your project; you MUST use VB 6, today. An executable built with VB 2005 (or 2007) will work only on Windows Vista and possibly on few advanced Windows XP versions. However, an application developed with VB 6 will work on Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP, and Vista. Note that VB 6 will work even on the Windows version coming after Vista, because VB 6 is compatible today with Vista. Always use an older version complier when you build executables, in order to be certain they work on ALL available OS/Interpreters existing on the market.

The very, very important message to you  is, if you do have VB .Net, VB 2003, VB 2005, or VB 2007, do not waste one moment: buy your Visual Basic 6 now, while you can still do it. Very soon VB 6 compilers may double in value, and they may become very difficult to find. VB 6 is far more advanced that any of the newer versions. Besides, it is also way more useful in terms of building commercial *.exe software.

In this page there is little, general info about:
1. Purchasing Visual Basic
2. General Presentation of Visual Basic

 PURCHASING VISUAL BASIC

There are many possibilities to purchase Visual Basic 6 compiler, and we  have no doubts our suggestion may not be the best one possible. We buy software just like anybody else, and we look for the cheapest offers available. When we say cheapest, we refer to the legal options, not to the pirated copies, because those people who "sell" copies of software are plain thieves, and we become "accomplices" to theft, even if that happens without our knowledge. The practice of selling pirated copies of software is despicable.

When you decide to buy Visual Basic 6 check this website TRUSTPRICE--please follow this link: http://www.trustprice.com/parts-stxt-visual+studio+6.0-sc_id-55.html.

Instead of purchasing Visual Basic 6 directly, it may be better to buy MS Visual Studio 6 package instead (you will have "Visual Basic 6" and "MS C++" in the same package). Another good option to buy cheap, legal software may be eBay, though great caution is always advised when buying anything from eBay.

Last word: try to purchase minimum the Professional version of VB 6 (or Visual Studio 6) not the Standard one.

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF VISUAL BASIC COMPILER

Visual Basic has evolved from the world-famous Quick Basic; however, evolution doesn't necessarily means "better". At some point in time Quick Basic was incredibly powerful. (Same thing is valid for all other programming languages) In fact, Quick Basic was so powerful that Microsoft (and many other software companies) decided that it is better to "take out" or to "mask" few of those incredibly powerful features. The great secret in software programming is, the true power resides in the most primitive programming languages (Assembler, Fortran, C) when PCs were initially defined theoretically.

In Learn Hardware Firmware and Software Design are presented few "tricks" in software programming. For example, it is explained how to create/read/write binary files using techniques you will never find in any publication today; it is presented how to build an Internet Browser with minimal programming efforts; and you will discover the Graph Trace application (dynamic, graphic, field data display) which is really something!

For information about working with Visual Basic please check the following link: Link to MSDN site at Microsoft. Please be aware there are thousands other sites on the Internet dealing with programming in Visual Basic. However, we do not work with any of them; we relate only on MSDN.

Following is a minimized picture of the running Visual Basic 6 IDE:
